A BMI chart turns a single number into a category. It takes the Body Mass Index you get from your height and weight, and places it on a scale published by the World Health Organization. That scale is what makes the number readable: on its own, a value like 23.4 means nothing until you know where it sits.

How to read the chart correctly
Two details decide whether you read your own result accurately, and both are routinely got wrong.
The boundaries are exact, not approximate
Each band includes its lower bound and excludes its upper bound. A Body Mass Index of exactly 18.5 is normal weight, not underweight. A value of exactly 25 is overweight, not normal weight. This is not a rounding convention invented for convenience: it is what makes the bands cover the whole scale without overlapping, so that every possible value belongs to exactly one category.
One decimal place is enough
Reporting a result to three decimal places suggests a precision the measurement does not have. Your height measured in the morning and in the evening can differ by a centimetre, and that alone moves the index. Treating the chart as a set of sharp walls, rather than as a set of broad zones, is a misreading of what it was designed to do. What each band actually means
The categories describe a position on a population scale. They are screening labels, not diagnoses, and each one carries a different kind of information.
Below 18.5 — underweight
A value under the normal band can reflect a naturally slight build, but it can also be a signal worth investigating, particularly when weight has dropped recently or without an obvious explanation. In older adults especially, a low index is read first as a possible sign of undernutrition rather than as a good outcome.
From 18.5 to 25 — normal weight
This band is where population-level health outcomes are most favourable on average. It is a wide range, and it deliberately covers very different body shapes. Sitting inside it does not certify that you are healthy, just as sitting outside it does not mean you are not.
From 25 to 30 — overweight
This is the band where the index is least informative on its own. It is the range where muscular people are most often misclassified, and where waist measurement adds the most value, because where fat is stored matters as much as how much of it there is.
30 and above — the three obesity classes
Above 30 the classification splits into three classes, which exist because the practical implications differ across such a wide range. The split is a clinical convenience for describing a population, not a judgement about any individual.
When the chart does not apply at all
There are situations where the adult chart should simply not be used. During pregnancy, the index is not interpretable with these categories, and the reference remains the value from before pregnancy. In children and teenagers, the result is read on growth percentile curves specific to age and sex, because a growing body changes shape continuously. In both cases, forcing the adult bands onto the number produces a label that means nothing.
When to talk to a health professional
A result outside the normal band is a reason to ask a question, not a reason to act alone. It is worth speaking to a doctor if your weight has changed noticeably without a deliberate change in habits, if a low index comes with fatigue or loss of appetite, or simply if the number worries you. A professional can look at the things this chart cannot see: your history, your body composition and the rest of your health.
